CHENNAI: Desi awards, Grammy style. That's what Carnatica.com has planned along with partners Ashtalakshmi Creations, Lakshita and Maximum Media. On August 19 at 6.45 p.m. in one of the city's largest auditoriums, Kamarajar Arangam, veterans in light and classical music will get the golden Virtuoso Awards 2005, the first of its kind venture conceptualised on the lines of the Grammy Awards, exclusively for those who have made a significant contribution to the field of Indian music, K.N. The Lifetime Achievement award in Carnatic music goes to D.K. Pattammal and the best Carnatic vocalist award for Sudha Raghunathan. The best classical instrumentalist award goes to the Grammy Award winner Pandit Viswa Mohan Bhat. The Versatility award is for Hariharan (ghazal, fusion and playback singing) and the Most Popular Percussionist award to Sivamani.

The Lifetime Achievement award for film music is for Ilayaraja, the Most Versatile Vocalist award for S.P. Balasubramaniam and Chitra (film, devotional (multilingual)) categories.

Lakshita, the public relations group from the M.O.P. Vaishnav College, did a market survey on what kind of music the youth prefer.

Film director Vasanth said just as all roads leading to Rome, all types of music reach the ears and in this process there is no music that is big or small. Grammy award winner Vikku Vinayakram said an award of an international kind for all kinds of music was very much required in India. "None could be more capable of accomplishing this other than the Carnatica team," he said.

The function plans quite a few surprises to the audience who will be present with donor passes. There is a dance performance by the John Britto group, besides performances by celebrities. S. Sowmya, another founder-director of Carnatica.com said Nalli Kuppuswamy sponsored the show. Jayashree Narayanan of Ashtalakshmi Creators also spoke.
