Skies open up, rain lashes the city once again

CHENNAI:
Several parts of the city experienced heavy rain on Tuesday. North Chennai experienced heavy showers in evening, while south Chennai received considerable rain in the morning and afternoon.
The Met Department said Nungambakkam recorded 3.6 mm of rainfall between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday. Meenambakkam received marginal rain of 0.2 mm during the same period.
Areas such as Kolathur, Villivakkam and Korattur experienced heavy rains between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. in the evening, said a resident of Kolathur. A resident of Adyar said that areas, including Adyar and Velachery also received considerable rain.
A Met official said that the showers in the city were an offshoot of the Southwest monsoon, which occurs between June and September. The city reservoirs also recorded considerable rains in the 24-hour reading till 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday. Red Hills received 4 cm and Cholavaram recorded 3 cm. The catchment areas of Poondi recorded 2 cm and Chembarambakkam 1 cm. The weather office has forecast a shower or thundershower in some areas of the city on Wednesday.
