MUMBAI: The death toll in the city in flood-related diseases has reached 142, with 14 persons losing their lives on Tuesday, the office of the Director-General of Health Services said. The cumulative figure including the rest of Maharashtra is 231. While the maximum number of deaths, 98, has occurred due to fever, leptospirosis or suspected leptospirosis has claimed 27 lives. There was much debate last week on declaring an epidemic of leptospirosis. But the Government and the municipal corporation finally maintained that it was not an epidemic-like situation. The project coordinator of medical camps from the corporation, Sunil Tayshete, said the medical camps at Bharat Nagar were winding up. "Treatment is being given at the existing health post. We are distributing pamphlets explaining to people how to prevent any waterborne diseases. The situation is under control in these areas." Irfan Sheikh, a resident of Nirmalnagar, near Bandra, said, "Two deaths that occurred in our area were of leptospirosis but now everything is okay. People in hospitals are also recovering and coming back."
