Manmohan's `visit' sends police into a real tizzy

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: An unscheduled visit to Hyderabad by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday afternoon did not materialise but it did send the Government machinery, particularly the police, into a state of high alert.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy even rescheduled the Cabinet meeting from 4 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. and rushed to the Begumpet airport to receive the Prime Minister with a contingent of Ministers, AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh, and senior officials in tow.

The police arranged tight security at the airport at short notice. Dr. Singh was to have made a 30-minute long transit halt at the airport after bad weather forced cancellation of his aerial survey of flood-affected areas in north Karnataka.

However, at the last minute, it was decided that the halt was not necessary after all and he flew to New Delhi.
