"Make the peace process visible in Kashmir"

Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR: Making a fervent appeal to end the vicious cycle of terror and counter-terror, the CPI (M) state secretary, M.Y. Tarigami on Wednesday called for an all party conference in Jammu and Kashmir to initiate a process of reconciliation. He asked New Delhi to make the peace process visible on the ground in the State.

Releasing a letter he has written to the heads of various political parties, Mr. Tarigami said that the status quo in the state was no solution to the problem.

Not satisfied with the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's call, made in his Independence Day speech, for a dialogue, the CPI (M) leader said "the time has come for the Government of India to show flexibility in its approach and tell the people what the mechanism for holding such a dialogue was." He blamed the failure of leadership for the present crisis.

He expressed concern over the "pace and intensity" of the ongoing peace process between India and Pakistan, particularly with reference to the initiatives on Kashmir. The confidence building measures are a welcome step but "we need to see that the situation on the ground also changes and should work in that direction."

He made a passionate appeal to the people of India and Pakistan to raise strong voices, aimed at influencing their respective governments, for the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir issue in a peaceful manner.s
