Founder-Secretary of C. P. Brown Library thanks YSR, Collector for the change

CUDDAPAH: The Anglo-Saxon spelling of Cuddapah is to undergo a phonetic change to Kadapa, the way eminent Indologist, Charles Phillip Brown, spelt it during his stint as district Collector between 1820 and 1829, with effect from August 19.

The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will inaugurate a `Kadapa' plaque at Putlampalle near here on Friday, bringing into effect the phonetic change and a G.O. will be issued that day, according to official sources. Brown wrote in his `Anthology of Cuddapah Letters' that it would be apt to spell Cuddapah as Kadapa or Cadapa, so that people pronounced it correctly and easily, according to the Founder-Secretary of the C.P. Brown Library, Janumaddi Hanumath Sastry.

Taking cue from Brown's observations incorporated in `Glimpses of Local History' from C.P. Brown letters published in Telugu by Sri Venkateswara University in 1979, Dr. Hanumath Sastry has often put forth the demand to respell the district as Kadapa, since 2000. Scriptures dating back to the 10th century also referred to the district as Kadapa, he stated.

Dr. Sastry said that he was determined to ensure the phonetic change, pained at Cuddapah being pronounced as Coodapa in AIR and Doordarshan's national news bulletins.Thereupon, several State Government departments used the spelling, Kadapa, while the Central Government offices and railway authorities continued to use the old spelling Cuddapah.
