Pondicherry should seek legislation on quota: MLA

Special Correspondent

PONDICHERRY: Secretary of Pondicherry State committee of the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) A. Anbalagan, MLA, has called upon the Union Territory administration to emulate Tamil Nadu Government in urging the Centre to bring in legislation on quota in unaided private medical and engineering colleges.

Mr. Anbalagan told mediapersons here on Wednesday that the Supreme Court order dispensing with reservation and government quotas in private educational institutions had come as a shock to students belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes and other weaker sections.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had urged the Centre to bring in a legislation in Parliament to end the "anomalous situation" created by the judgment on admissions to private unaided professional colleges. She had also sent a letter to the Prime Minister, projecting the serious implications of the court order. She had also made it clear that if the issues involved were not tackled effectively, there would be no alternative for the State government, but to take over the higher professional colleges.

Mr. Anbalagan said the Union Territory administration should emulate this stand.
