Replace yellow cards with red ones, Anbalagan demands

Assess true economic conditions of the people, AIADMK leader tells government

PONDICHERRY: The Secretary of the Pondicherry AIADMK, A. Anbalagan, MLA, leading a team of residents of Uppalam Assembly constituency, returned to the Director of the Civil Supplies department, K. Elumalai on Thursday a large number of `yellow colour' ration cards distributed to the families ``without assessing'' their true economic conditions.

These families were holding previously red colour cards and when fresh enumeration was done for new cards the Directorate of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs identified these poor families as those coming under `above poverty line' category of families and hence distributed yellow cards.

Mr.Anbalagan said that the authorities should replace yellow cards with red colour cards lest the party should intensify the agitation.

Protest staged

Volunteers of the Pondicherry unit of the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) held a demonstration on Thursday at the office of the Director of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs here to protest against the `confusion and chaos' in the identification of families for distributing ration cards.

The chairperson of the Association, K. Shanthi, led the agitation, which was addressed by a number of functionaries.
