HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has announced that in the next three years all towns in the State will be ensured safe drinking water supply. The Government will be spending Rs. 400 crores additionally for this purpose. Already 54 water supply schemes with an outlay of Rs. 404 crores have been undertaken.
Assistance sought
Reviewing the progress of the ongoing works here on Thursday, Dr. Reddy directed the officials concerned to secure the required financial assistance from agencies like HUDCO. He said supply of safe drinking water was essential as every year water-borne diseases such as gastroenteritis were claiming so many lives.The goal must be to provide clean drinking water round the clock to all, he said. Seven schemes had already been completed at a cost of Rs.17 crores under Plan budget adding 33 million litres a day to Itchapuram, Amudalavalasa, Salur, Ramachandrapuram, Pithapuram, Adoni and Mancherial.
Completed schemes
Eight works were under execution at Siddipet, Ramachandrapuram, Mandapet, Kovvur, Nidadavole, Chirala and Paloncha towns at a cost of Rs.37 crores, a press release from the Chief Minister's office stated.
17 projects over
In all, 17 schemes had been completed at a cost of Rs.141 crores with assistance from the HUDCO while 21 more were under progress. Kandukur, Nellore, Vikarabad, Anantapur, Guntakal, Nirmal, Karimnagar, Nandyal (Phase II), Madanapalle and Palamaner had been awarded new schemes, the release stated.
