File review plea on quota: Janata Dal (S)

Special Correspondent

PONDICHERRY: The Pondicherry Government should file a review petition in the Supreme Court to ensure continuance of quota for students in private unaided professional institutions.

Talking to presspersons here, the Pondicherry Janata Dal (Secular) president, E. Ganesan, said the recent order of the Supreme Court would affect the poor and weaker sections. Hence, the Pondicherry Administration should file a review petition to protect social justice.

He criticised the Pondicherry Administration for its failure to take steps to ensure equal sharing of seats between the Government and the managements in private medical colleges during 2005-2006.

Although more than 10 days had lapsed since the Supreme Court issued an order directing the managements of the two private medical colleges here to admit students for management quotas also on the basis of the merit list of the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC), nothing had happened so far.

The Committee had already selected students through an entrance test to fill 50 per cent of the total seats in each of the two colleges under the Government quota.

Mr. Ganesan said speedy steps should be taken as time was running out to start classes.
