Seven students hurt

KURNOOL: Seven students were hurt when supporters of SFI and AISF clashed at STBC college here on Thursday. The two groups were disputing over admissions in the college for a few days. As sequel of the incidents, the two groups armed with sticks and stones clashed on the college campus. Seven persons from both sides received bleeding injuries. The police intervened and dispersed the mob. Some of the students were taken into custody, while the injured were shifted to hospital.

Red sanders worth Rs. 2 lakhs seized

Nellore: Acting on a tip-off, the forest officials of Venkatagiri zone, Nellore district, seized red sanders worth Rs. 2 lakhs in the Velugonda forest area, on Wednesday. The search was found after an intensive combing of the area for over four hours. The material was found concealed behind some bushes. The offenders, however, escaped from the scene. - Staff Reporter

APNA's advice to nursing home owners

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association (APNA) has requested the owners of nursing homes not to take up sex determination tests using ultrasound and other techniques. In a press release, APNA President and General Secretary, C. Subramanyam and Y. Ravinder Rao, respectively, asked nursing homes to abide by rules and regulations of the Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act. Saying it had come to the notice of authorities that some hospitals were conducting sex determination tests, they advised nursing homes to register themselves with the PNDT authority (District Collector or District Medical and Health Officer) and follow the rules. - Staff Reporter

Bar presidents to meet on Sunday

HYDERABAD: A State-level meeting of bar presidents will be organised by the High Court Bar Association at the Jubilee Hall here on Sunday. The association president, B. Purushothama Reddy, told reporters that the meeting was convened to discuss coordination between bench and bar, reduction in pendency of cases and legal literacy and aid programmes. The Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde and acting Chief Justice of the State, Bilal Nazki, will participate. - Special Correspondent

SCR runs special trains

HYDERABAD: The South Central Railway (SCR) is running special trains between Hyderabad and Hazrat Nizamuddin to clear the extra rush of traffic and waitlisted passengers. An express special train (No 707) will depart Hyderabad at 5.45 p.m. on August 20 and arrive at Hazart Nizamuddin at 8.20 p.m. the next day. In the return direction, the train (No 708) will leave Hazrat Nizamuddin at 7.25 a.m. on August 22 and arrive at Hyderabad at 11 a.m. the next day. - Special Correspondent

YSR greets people

Hyderabad: Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy greeted the people of the State, especially the women and children, on the eve of `Raksha Bandhan' and said the tradition of tying `rakhis' should make one proud. - Special Correspondent

Six killed in accidents

ONGOLE: Six persons were killed in different accidents at various places in the State on Thursday. In the first incident, three persons died when the mini-lorry in which they were travelling crashed into a stationery lorry at Singarayakonda near here on Thursday. In the second incident, two persons died and two others sustained injuries when two private buses collided at Tungabhadra checkpost, Kurnool. According to reports, Bhupal Reddy of Cuddapah and Lalitha Bai of Rajasthan died in the mishap. In the third incident, a 14-year-old girl died and eight others were injured on the National Highway No.5 at Budampadu junction, Guntur, when an RTC bus proceeding to Chirala, hit a lorry. - Special Correspondent

KURNOOL: The 59th Dak Adalat will be conducted at Visakhapatnam on September 15, according to a press note from Superintendent of Post Offices M.H. Hanumantha Rao here. The complainants could direct their grievance to C.S.P. Kumar, Assistant Postmaster-General, Hyderabad, before August 22 with a superscription `59th Dak Aalat' on the letter. - Staff Reporter

Plea for night patrols to curb dacoities

CUDDAPAH: The Cuddapah police on Thursday advised residents of housing colonies to night patrol their respective areas in groups to protect themselves from a dacoit gang on the prowl in the town. The gang's modus operandi is to enter houses by removing bolts on main doors and removing window grills and commit thefts, M. Ramprasada Rao, DSP, said in pamphlets circulated in households in the town on Thursday. - Staff Reporter

Two houses burgled

Nellore: Two house burglaries were reported in the district on Thursday. At Ponguru Kandriga village of Marripadu mandal, offenders who gained access into the house of an RMP doctor, took away ornaments, besides Rs. 15,000 in cash when the inmates were sleeping. At Gudipallipadu area, thieves entered the house of a security guard and took away 16 sovereigns of ornaments. - Staff Reporter

Police arrest nine

Nellore: The police in the district nabbed nine persons in connection with various offences. At Bogole, four persons were arrested in connection with a bomb-hurling incident. At Manubolu, four persons were taken into custody in connection with a dowry harassment case. At Chillakuru, the police arrested a jeep driver in connection with an accident in which nine persons were injured.

Students stage dharna

ELURU: Students of Sir C.R. Reddy College staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate here on Thursday under the banner of the Student Federation of India (SFI) seeking reimbursement of fee to SC and ST students for the academic year 2004-05.

They also wanted the Government to sanction pending scholarships for them. The SFI leaders, D.N.V.D. Prasad, and Y. Aruna, said the poor students were unable to pursue their education due to the delay in fee reimbursement. - Staff Reporter

Renewable Energy Day tomorrow

ELURU: Renewable Energy Day will be observed here on August 20 under the aegis of the Non-conventional Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NEDCAP).

Plea to fill para-medical vacancies

Kakinada: The Vydya Vidhana Parishad and Medical and Health Employees' Union has asked the Government to fill para medical posts on a war footing in view of the prevalence of malaria and diarrhoea in the district. The union, at its meeting here on Thursday, resolved to request the Government to fill the posts with regular employees instead of taking them on contract.

The meeting took note of the notification issued by the Government on filling of 14 MPHO posts and 10 Lab technician posts in the agency on a regular basis. __Correspondent

Visakhapatnam: Bharat Heavy Plate and Vessels Limited has bagged another order from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited. The order, valued at Rs.47.44 crores, is for supplying fired heaters package on turnkey basis to HPCL .__Special Correspondent

Visakhapatnam: The online cell bill collection counter of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited at the NTPC-Simhadri Telephone Exchange meant for subscribers in the vicinity will be kept open on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., says a BSNL release. __Special Correspondent
