HC summons DDA, MCD chiefs

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday summoned MCD Commissioner, DDA Vice- Chairman, Director of Education and Land & Development Officer in connection with un-aided private schools' failure to give free education to certain percentage of children from weaker sections despite having agreed to the condition at the time of land allotment.

A Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice B.A. Khan and Justice Madan B. Lokur asked the four top officials to appear before it on August 25, when the matter will be taken up for further hearing.

The Bench wanted to know the names and the total number of schools which were given Government land at throwaway prices in the Capital with such a condition.

Observing that the social objective of providing free education to poor students was getting defeated, it took exception to the failure of Delhi Government and land- owning agencies in cracking the whip against defaulting schools.

Ashok Agrawal, counsel for petitioner Social Jurist - a lawyers' group, submitted that schools did not adhered to the land allotment condition and the authorities failed to enforce it despite court's order.-PTI
