Seven stray cattle caught under reward scheme, court told

MCD submits status report in High Court,192 caught in south Delhi

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday informed the Delhi High Court that so far seven stray cattle had been caught and brought to the cattle pound at Malviya Nagar by individuals under the "catch-for-cash scheme'' announced by the Delhi High Court for catching untended cows in South Delhi earlier this month.

In a status report submitted to a Division Bench comprising Justice B.A. Khan and Justice Madan B. Lokur, counsel for the local body, Nazmi Waziri, submitted that the civic body had on its own so far caught 192 stray cattle in South Delhi.

He submitted that a total of 72 illegal dairies had been identified in the Capital's South Zone of which 12 had been demolished and for the remaining the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of the area had been approached for proper action.

The Corporation also annexed a copy of a public notice brought out by it in a local English daily informing people about the mobile numbers of the Veterinary Officer, Pradeep Kumar, and two Veterinary Inspectors of South Zone and two dedicated stationary phone numbers.

Meanwhile, counsel for the Common Cause on whose public interest litigation (PIL) the Court passed orders for removal of stray cattle from the Capital, Meira Bhatia, submitted that the Corporation had overshot the order on the "catch-for-cash'' scheme by interpolating into it that only bona-fide residents carrying certificates to that effect from residents welfare associations concerned would be entitled to catch cattle and hand over them to the local body.

The Bench later adjourned the matter for August 24.

The High Court had on August 4 directed the Corporation to involve people in the campaign for catching stray cattle and reward them Rs. 2,000 per head of cattle caught.
