Shinde, Khaleel put Hyderabad in driver's seat

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: A 145-run stand for the fifth wicket between Amol Shinde (87, 83b, 10x4) and Ibrahim Khaleel (89 not out, 132b, 7x4) saw Hyderabad post a commanding 354 for six in the allotted 90 overs against Tripura on the opening day of the three-day Group-A league match in the Mindteck-Buchi Babu all-India invitation cricket tournament at the ICL-GNC ground on Thursday.

Tripura's spin-oriented attack didn't pose much of a challenge to Hyderabad, which was provided with a 124-run start by Ronald (77, 103b, 13x4) and Ravi Teja (49) after opting to bat.

Spin was introduced in the 13th over. Hyderabad suffered a mini collapse when the openers and Bharat Kumar left in the space of 16 runs — off-spinner Joyanta Debnath (three for 79) accounting for two of the dismissals — but Khaleel steadied the ship with a 55-run stand with Fiaz Ahmed (31). He followed it up with the century-plus association with Shinde.

Skipper C.M. Jha's century (128, 188b, 18x4, 1x6) enabled Jharkhand, which chose to bat, make 278 against Vidarbha in a Group-D clash at the SPIC-YMCA ground.

Jha, who walked in at No. 5, was the last man out, caught at long-on by Fazal while giving left-arm spinner A. Saurabh the charge.

Earlier, Subrotho Ghose (59, 68b, 6x4, 3x6) and Abhishek Moitra (35) put on 84 for the third wicket. At stumps, Vidarbha was 22 for one.

In a Group-B contest at the SRMC-turf, Maharashtra, which decided to take first strike, scored 272 against Rajasthan. The best phase of the innings was the 78-run third-wicket stand between Mansingh Nigde (57, 109b, 8x4) and Nikhil Paradkar (42). For Rajasthan, off-spinner Rahul Kanwat and left-arm spinner Naresh Ghelot shared seven wickets. At close, Rajasthan was 20 for one.

The scores:

Hyderabad 354 for six in 90 overs (Ronald 77, Ravi Teja 49, Amol Shinde 87, Ibrahim Khaleel 89 not out) v Tripura.

Maharashtra 272 in 86.2 overs (Mansingh Nigde 57, Nikhil Paradkar 42, Rahul Kanwat four for 58) v Rajasthan 20 for one in five overs.

Jharkhand 278 in 75.4 overs (Subrotho Ghose 59, C.M. Jha 128) v Vidarbha 22 for one in 12 overs.
