Chennakuppam residents complain of pollution, odours

CHENNAI: Villagers from Chennakuppam in Kancheepuram district on Wednesday demanded that a biomedical incinerator at Chennaikuppam village should be closed.

At a press conference in the city, they highlighted their concerns over pollution because of the hospital waste incinerator.

"Our attempts to convey our opposition to the siting of the facility were repeatedly frustrated by local government and government agencies and the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board," a villager said.

Members of Toxics Link and the Corporate Accountability Desk were also present. "Pollution is merely one and the most noticeable of problems associated with the incinerator. We are equally concerned about the takeover of forest land, the violation of siting guidelines and most importantly, the lack of transparency and public participation," Rajesh Mootha, an orchid farmer with a greenhouse in Chennakuppam said.
