COLOMBO: The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam on Thursday agreed to start talks with the Sri Lankan Government to `review' the `practical functioning' of the ceasefire agreement, a senior adviser to the President told The Hindu. "This has been a long-time demand made by the Government as well as the Norwegian facilitators to review the implementation of the CFA," the senior adviser said. The latest development is in response to a letter by Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga to Norwegian Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik requesting an "urgent meeting" between her Government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam "in the presence of the facilitator", Norway, to review the "practical functioning" of the ceasefire agreement. A political observer said the LTTE's acceptance to discuss the implementation of the CFA could be a measure to stave off possible international action against them as sought by Colombo in the aftermath of the August 12 assassination of its Foreign Affairs Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar. The formal letter by the President to the Norwegian Prime Minister was against the backdrop of a request made by the Government before Kadirgamar's assassination for a meeting between senior Sri Lankan military personnel and senior LTTE military cadres to "devise ways and means of ending the political killings that had been taking place recently."
