Policemen asked not to harass common people

Take action against genuine sympathisers of Maoists: DGP

HYDERABAD: Police officials have been cautioned against misusing ban on Maoists to harass common public.

The Director-General of Police, Swaranjit Sen, issued strict instructions in this regard to the district Superintendents of Police at a video conference on Thursday. Additional Directors-General of Police, K. Aravinda Rao (Intelligence), P.V. Naidu (Law and Order) and R.P. Singh (Logistics), were also present.

A police press release said the DGP was firm that the officials not harm people under the pretext that they abetted the activities of Maoists.

Action should be taken only against genuine sympathisers of Maoists who aided them in violent actions. "The Government is committed not to create hurdles to the common man", he said. The conference also discussed beefing up security to elected representatives, intelligence on naxalites, coordination between neighbouring districts, checking of vehicles on district borders and vigilance at public places.

Mr. Sen earlier listened to the problems of the SPs in encountering naxalism and their requirements.

Plea for survey

He asked them to elicit cooperation of the elected representatives whenever they went to remote areas to attend public functions.

The incident in which Congress MLA, C. Narsi Reddy, was killed should be taken as an example to learn a lesson on how to improve security to leaders and initiate preventive steps.

He explained the circumstances which led to the re-imposition of ban.
