Arrack vendor gets jail term

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Prabhakaran, 37, was sentenced to six years' rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.2 lakhs by Additional Sessions Judge Fast Track Court II Immanuel P. Kolladi on Thursday after he was found guilty of vending arrack at Kallara on May 1999.

Unidentified body found

The unidentified body of a middle-aged man was found on the railway track below the National Highway bypass bridge at Chakka on Wednesday night. The police suspect the man to have committed suicide by jumping in front of a train. The body has been kept at the Medical College Hospital mortuary for identification.

Youth killed in accident

A 20-year-old youth, Vipin, of Varkala, was killed when the bike on which he was riding pillion, was hit by a tempo van at Attingal on Thursday evening. Though he was rushed to a private hospital near by, he succumbed to his injuries. The body has now been kept in the mortuary of Medical College Hospital.

Miscreants attack

Unidentified persons threw stones and attempted to break into the house of a senior citizen at Vazhayila in Peroorkada police station limits early on Thursday.

The police have registered a case of trespass on the basis of a complaint given by the resident, Jeevananda Das, a retired professor. The attack occurred at 2.30 a.m. An official said the miscreants had arrived in the area in a van.
