NEW DELHI: Expressing dissatisfaction over the "Compliance Report" on adhering to the condition of providing free education to poor students by un-aided and aided schools here, the Delhi High Court on Thursday summoned in person the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner, the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) Vice-Chairman, the Director of the Education of the Delhi Government and the Land & Development Officer. A Division Bench comprising Justice B.A. Khan and Justice Madan B. Lokur asked the above-mentioned officials to appear before the Court in person on August 25. The Bench also sought the names and the number of the schools who had defaulted on the implementation of the condition of providing free education to children of economically weaker section. These schools were allotted land at concessional rates with the condition that of their respective total strength, they would make available 25 percent of the seats free to students of economically weaker section. Observing that the purpose of providing free education to students belonging to economically weaker section was getting defeated, the Bench pulled up the Delhi Government and the Land & Development officer for not initiating action against the erring schools. The Bench had also taken exception to a fresh decision by the Delhi Government that the condition would be applicable from May 1, 2004.
