Head constable shot by CRPF jawan, dies

NEW DELHI: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) constable posted at the 6 Akbar Road — official residence of the Union Health Minister, Dayanidhi Maran — allegedly shot his senior colleague with his service rifle in New Delhi on Thursday. He was arrested and his weapon seized.

Around 7 a.m., constable Ganesh of the 73rd Battalion returned to his barrack after completing his shift. He allegedly entered into an altercation with head constable Suresh over some issue. At the time, the shift in-charge was asleep and other CRPF personnel were on duty. In a fit of rage, Ganesh allegedly fired 16 rounds at Suresh from his service weapon.

Suresh sustained multiple bullet injuries and was rushed to hospital where he died later. Meanwhile, Ganesh was overpowered by the security personnel and handed over to the police. Senior officials of the Delhi police and CRPF rushed to the spot after hearing about the incident.

During interrogation, Ganesh reportedly did not appear repentant and confessed to having killed Suresh.

Investigations revealed that last year a departmental enquiry had been initiated against Ganesh for being absent for a long period without permission of the competent authority; after this he was declared an absconder. However, Ganesh recently joined duty following which an enquiry was initiated against him. It is learnt that head constable Suresh was supposed to stand witness in that enquiry and he had apparently decided to make an adverse remark against Ganesh. This led to regular altercations between them.

While the Tughlak Road police have registered a murder case, they are trying to reconstruct the entire sequence of events leading to the incident. The CRPF has also initiated an independent investigation into the case.

In a similar case reported in September 2003, a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) guard, Suresh, posted at the residence of a judge on Purana Quila Road had shot at his colleague and then killed himself. The CISF guard's request for leave had been turned down by his officer in-charge.
