Tendulkar, Kareena get Rajiv Gandhi awards

Awards presented on eve of former Prime Minister's birth anniversary

MUMBAI: Industrialist Venugopal Dhoot, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, Mammen Mathew, editor, Malayala Manorama, and Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, chairperson and managing director, Biocon, were among those presented with the annual Rajiv Gandhi Awards. Union Minister for Industry and Commerce Kamal Nath presented the awards on Friday.

On the eve of the former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi's 61st birth anniversary, the Mumbai Pradesh Youth Congress honoured 11 most promising personalities who have excelled in various fields and brought honour to the nation. Accordingly, Mr. Mathew was chosen for his distinguished work in the field of journalism, Mr. Dhoot for industry, Ms. Shaw Mazumdar for her work as a woman entrepreneur, Malvinder Singh, chairperson and managing director of Ranbaxy, as a promising young businessman, and Meenakshi Gopinath, principal, Lady Shriram College, New Delhi, was also voted best principal in a newsmagazine survey.

Others who were presented with the award were actors Sunil Shetty, Kareena Kapoor and Mrinal Kulkarni, Sant Singh Chatwal, a non-resident Indian, and Ashok Mehta, president, Lions Club International. Charan Singh Sapra, president of the Mumbai Pradesh Youth Congress, said the awards were instituted eight years ago to recognise excellence in various fields and were always presented a day before Rajiv Gandhi's birth anniversary. The award consists of a trophy and a copy of Sonia Gandhi's book on her late husband.

Past recipients include Kumarmangalam Birla, S.P. Godrej, Shahrukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Anand Mahindra, M.F. Hussain, Kumar Ketkar, Rajdeep Sardesai, Sania Mirza and Dr. Abhay Bang. Among those present on the occasion were Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, All India Congress Committee general secretary, Margaret Alva, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Prabha Rau and others. On the occasion, the Mumbai Pradesh Youth Congress donated Rs. 1 lakh to the Chief Minister as flood relief.
