Six wounded in Manipur police firing

Iboyaima Laithangbam

IMPHAL: At least six persons were injured, some seriously, in Churachandpur district of Manipur on Friday when police fired on a mob.

Members of the Zomi Students' Federation (ZSF) took out a procession demanding the unconditional release of six students who had been arrested earlier. The ZSF is demanding compensation for the family of the 11 tribals killed in recent counter-insurgency operations. The students had called an indefinite strike but it was suspended on Friday after they reached an understanding with the State Government. When the six arrested students were not released, the ZSF became violent. They stormed Government offices, including that of the District Collector, and the police station, and set three vehicles on fire.

To disperse the students, the police opened fire. Three persons were wounded. The police also fired tear-gas canisters.

A curfew has been declared in the area.

The indefinite general strike along the two national highways by the Sadar Hill District Demand Committee was suspended from noon on Friday. Hundreds of vehicles that were stranded have started entering Imphal.
