Coordination with UPA: Left may review stand

Special Correspondent

Jyoti Basu's hint comes in the wake of Centre's decision on PSUs

  • "We have to keep going for four more years"
  • Chidambaram's announcement satisfies Left leaders

KOLKATA: Veteran Marxist leader and Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Jyoti Basu on Friday hinted at the Left parties reviewing their decision to suspend their participation in the Coordination Committee meetings with the United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

The question of taking a fresh look at the decision appears to have come in the wake of the announcement by the UPA Government on Tuesday that the strategic sale of shares in 13 profit-making public sector units has been called off in keeping with the guidelines of the Common Minimum Programme.

"What has happened is good ... we [leaders of the Left parties] will meet in Delhi in September to decide whether to participate in Left-UPA Coordination Committee meetings [in the future]," Mr. Basu said here.

What appears significant is Mr. Basu's observation that "we have to keep going for four more years," till it is time for the next Lok Sabha elections.

Even while expressing reservations over the failure of the UPA Government to implement certain policies senior CPI (M) leaders have reiterated that there is now no question of withdrawing support to the Government.

The All-India Forward Bloc leadership wanted that the off-loading of stakes in BHEL be revised "before our move is re-considered," its general secretary, Debabrata Biswas, told The Hindu over telephone from New Delhi.
