TIRUCHI: Special awareness-cum-motivation campaign to explain the norms and simplified procedures to get clearance certificates and licenses for taking up agro-based industries under New Anna Marumalarchi Thittam has been launched in five blocks in the district. Under the programme, being implemented by the District Industries Centre, more than a dozen projects had been cleared in nine blocks in the district but there were no takers for the project in Vaiyampatti, Marungapuri, Lalgudi, Thatheingarpet and Musiri blocks. To create awareness among investors and motivate them to take up ventures, the district administration chalked out a special campaign. Officials from various agencies, particularly Agriculture and Horticulture Departments will guide them on selection of trade, location of unit besides marketing strategy.
Good potential
Despite the absence of any proposal under the New AMT in the last couple of years, various agro-based raw materials, which could be utilised for starting industrial units, are available in plenty. Vast extent of jasmine gardens and coconut groves abound the Vaiyampatti block while Thatheingarpet is suitable for starting sago industries. Coconut, mango and tomato are available in scores of villages in and around Marungapuri block. Entrepreneurs are quite unaware of various industrial applications of coconut products. Paddy growers of Musiri and Lalgudi blocks are being motivated to set up export-based modern rice mill. Officials are optimistic that a large number of diversified agro-industries can be started in Lalgudi block. "We are prepared to offer guidance in consultation with National Research Centre for Banana for manufacturing value-added banana products," sources said. Apart from banana-chips and pickles, even beverage units can be started using banana, for which the NRCB has evolved a technology.
