CHENNAI: Anna University Vice-Chancellor D. Viswanathan has been nominated as chairman of the Southern Regional Committee, Chennai, by the All-India Council for Technical Education. Mr. Viswanathan will hold office for three years from the date of constitution of the committee. The regional committee will advise and assist the AICTE in aspects such as planning, promoting and regulation of technical education in the region, assessing the prevalent scenario and anticipating future trends and suggesting measures for equitable distribution of technical education, Anuradha Gupta, member secretary, AICTE, said in her letter to Dr. Viswanathan.
Monitoring role
The committee will also assist in the monitoring and implementation of norms and standards in technical education and assist the National Board of Accreditation whenever required. The 17 member committee will have, among others, the Director of IIT, Madras; the Director of National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research, Taramani and the Principal of Pondicherry Engineering College, and the Director of Technical Education, Tamil Nadu. Dr. Viswanathan, who received the letter on Thursday, expressed the hope that the position would enable him to plan and implement educational innovations, especially for using technology for enhancing faculty abilities in the southern region, which has the largest number of technical education institutions and student strength.
