Two killed in lorry capsize

CHENNAI: Two persons died when a mini-lorry overturned on EVR Periyar High Road at Koyambedu, early on Friday. Five others in the vehicle, suffered minor injuries.

According to the police, the vehicle, laden with vegetables, was on its way to Manali with at least 10 persons in it. Soon after leaving the market, the vehicle hit the median around 5.15 a.m. and turned turtle. Arumugam (50) and Pandi (35), vegetable merchants from Tiruvottiyur, were thrown out and died on the spot.

Every day, mini-lorries from the city suburbs come to the vegetable and fruits market at Koyambedu early in the morning and the driver could have dozed off leading to the accident, police suspect. However, Madhan, the driver, fled the scene after the accident. A case under section 304 A (death caused due to rash and negligent act) has been registered by the Koyambedu traffic police.
