VISAKHAPATNAM: Showrooms of the Andhra Pradesh Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society (APCO) will be modernised by spending Rs.1.5 crores and plans were afoot to open 50 more showrooms, its Chairman Geddam Jagannadham said here on Saturday. APCO recorded a sale of Rs.100 crores last year through its 160 showrooms, including 33 outside the State, and this year's target was Rs.130 crores. Dress material worth Rs.51 crores will be purchased from the weavers cooperative societies, Mr. Jagannadham told a press conference. ``The Government's rule that employees should wear handloom fabrics once a week has benefited us and our sales have gone up from Rs.40 lakhs to Rs.50 lakhs,'' he said. To better the lot of handloom weavers, orders were placed to purchase Rs.35 crores worth of livery cloth through APCO. This had resulted in employment generation for nearly two lakh weavers. The wages had also been increased by 15 per cent, he said.
