Vehicles detained for violation

COIMBATORE: In a dusk-to-dawn drive carried out against violation by omni buses, the Transport Department checked 1,373 vehicles and registered cases against 136 vehicles including detention of 17 vehicles.

Following large-scale complaints about violation by omni bus operators, Deputy Transport Commissioner K. Yogarajan ordered for a crackdown. A team of 39 motor vehicle inspectors in different teams led by Regional Transport Officers (RTOs), S.S. Velumani (South), D. Mani (North) and M. Rajendran (Enforcement) along with five other RTOs in the region carried out checks on all major arterial roads.

Compounding fee

Checks were organised on Avanashi Road, Tiruchi Road, Ukkadam, Udumalpet, Palladam and at Avanashi. During the check as many as 1,373 vehicles were intercepted of which 467 were omni buses. Of the total number of cases registered, 57 were omni buses and 136 were other vehicles. A total of Rs 1.95 lakh was collected as tax and compounding fee from the vehicles booked for violations.

As many as 73 cases were registered for use of dazzling headlights of which 21 were omni buses and air horns were removed from 19 omni buses and 57 other vehicles. Sixteen cases were registered against omni buses for loading unaccompanied luggage. Four vehicles were booked for emitting excess smoke.
