Rail Europe opens office in Mumbai

K. T. Jagannathan

CHENNAI: Rail Europe, a joint venture between the French and Swiss National Railways (SNCF & SBB), has set up a liaison office in Mumbai.

The office will function as a nerve centre for the entire South Asia. Besides taking over the marketing of Rail Europe products, the Indian office will also provide training to general sales agents across South Asia.

Rail Europe is engaged in the business of sales and promotion of European rail tickets and passes in Asia, Australia, Africa and South America.

In an interaction with The Hindu, Gopi R. Iengar, Area Manager (India & South Asia), said India was the fourth largest market for Rail Europe, fetching a revenue of $10 million.

The $420 million company has two units — Rail Europe and Rail Europe 4A. Rail Europe caters to North America and Rail Europe 4A Asia, Australia, Africa and South America. Rail Europe 4A sold its products through general sales agents (GSAs), he said. In India, it has six GSAs.

Mr. Iengar said Rail Europe 4A could have greater control over marketing by establishing a presence in India. He said Rail Europe 4A had held road shows in the West and North. It held a similar road show in Chennai on Wednesday.

Its GSAs are equipped with Euronet computer terminals. Euronet is a system for issuing European train tickets and online reservation overseas.

Rail Europe offers point-to-point tickets and train journey reservations for clients going from one European city to another.
