BANGALORE: Policy planners should focus on generating more employment in rural areas to bridge the gap between urban and rural areas and creating wealth, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam said here on Saturday. Speaking at a leadership conclave organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here, the President said the best of healthcare and education in rural areas will not serve any purpose unless the purchasing power of the people is increased by generating employment. Only a thin line should divide the people of rural and urban areas if the country is to prosper. India should sustain a 10 per cent growth in its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) over the next decade to eradicate poverty. This could be delivered only through a creative leadership, the President said. Creative leadership is the need of the hour to ensure that the country sustains competitiveness and emerge as a developed nation. Quality, cost, and just in time practices should be the watchwords for development. These can be achieved through management stewardship, he said. Dr. Kalam said the country should ensure equity in distribution of energy and supply of quality power and provide appropriate technology for the growth of agriculture, industry and the services sector. He said the use of improved technology in agriculture will help resolve disputes relating to sharing of river waters between States and ease water scarcity. The threat of water scarcity in the years to come can be averted by the use of technology in agriculture, he said. The President called for greater efforts on the renewable energy front and work towards self-reliance in the field in the wake of the country's oil import bill touching Rs. 1,40,000 crores.
