KOTTAYAM: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala has said that the party will soon set up district-level committees for selection of candidates for the forthcoming local body elections. At a press conference here on Saturday, Mr. Chennithala said candidates with winning chances would be selected on the basis of consensus in the party. The committees will finalise the list of candidates in each district, he said. The seven-member committees will be headed by the District Congress Committee presidents concerned. He said Congressmen who had left the party during the recent split were returning to its fold. Mr. Chennithala said the fate of the Indian National League, which had tried to enter the LDF, should be a lesson for all. He reiterated that Kerala Congress(Jacob) leaders T.M. Jacob and Johnny Nellore should put in their papers as members of the legislature before switching sides. Mr. Chennithala said the KC(Jacob) leaders should follow the example of former Congress(S) leader V.C. Kabeer who had resigned as MLA before accepting membership of the Congress. The party will give full support to the nine-point programme announced by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, he said. The State executive of the party will be held on August 27 to discuss the issue.
