DINDIGUL: Courses offered by Gandhigram Rural Institute will be revamped with international programmes, besides South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation studies and internationalising the curricula with culture and arts, according to its Vice-Chancellor T. Karunakaran. Outlining the scope of activities and vision to achieve millennium development goals, at the inauguration of the golden jubilee year celebrations held at Gandhigram recently, he said the faculty would commit themselves to policy support, regional development plans, science and technology intervention and networking. To this extent, the courses would be revamped. Gandhian image and human resource expertise in community development and people's education are the marked strengths of the institute, the VC said, and perceived ample opportunities in knowledge connectivity for rural sectors, tapping efforts of corporate sectors for social responsibilities. Gandhigram Trust Managing Trustee R. Kousalya Devi, who inaugurated the celebrations, called for individual performance as well as teamwork for women's empowerment and rural uplift. Another former VC N. Markandan said that revamping of courses should be done in the light of socio, economic and political development. In his special address, yet another former Vice-Chancellor T.R. Natesan said the institute had qualified itself to attain a central university status. The institute should render its academic services for the establishment of the centre of excellence and strive to get a centre for improving the quality of research and extension in basic sciences, digital libraries, community radio and higher education.
Former VC and alumna of the institute, G. Pankajam said joyful learning and teaching marked the academic strength of the institute since its establishment.
GRI Professor N. Kamalamma traced historical perspectives from the genesis of the institute. While Registrar M. Sundaravadivelu welcomed the gathering, Professor N. Narayanaswamy proposed a vote of thanks.
