Order based on two writ appeals Petitioners say they were promised jobs `NPCIL recruiting staff from other States'
MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to consider those who had given land for the Koodankulam project, along with other candidates, while filling vacancies. The order was passed on two writ appeals moved by the Koodankulam Land Protection Council and the Koodankulam Anuminilayam Nilam Koduthorgal Matrum Atharavalargal Sangam. According to the associations, the NPCIL, during 1991-92, acquired their lands at the rate of Rs. 800 to Rs. 1,200 per acre, when the market value was more than Rs. 75,000 per acre. Claiming that they were promised jobs in the project, the petitioners said nothing had transpired till date. They alleged that the NPCIL was recruiting staff from other States, despite availability of qualified technical workmen among members of the associations. Petitioner's counsel P.H. Manoj Pandian contended that as per a Government Order passed on December 28, 1976, members of families, whose lands have been acquired for Government purposes or for projects of public sector undertakings, should be given preference in employment. Accepting the contention, the Bench directed the Corporation to consider the claims of the associations.
