TIRUPATI: The Minister for Social Welfare, Redya Naik, on Saturday asserted that the State Government was concerned about the welfare of socially oppressed classes. In this connection he cited the enhanced budget of Rs. 1,020 crores for social welfare nearly Rs. 220 crores more than the allocation in the last fiscal. Speaking at a function in Puttur after laying the stone for additional classrooms in the Government Degree College at a cost of Rs. 35 lakhs, the Minister said that the Government had earmarked Rs. 170 crores to provide permanent buildings for 85 residential schools in the State. He also pointed out that the Government had sanctioned 90 more social welfare hostels in the State in addition to the existing 2,312 hostels. The Puttur MLA, Gali Muddukrishnama Naidu, presiding over the function prided over the soft corner the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, had for Puttur and cited in this connection the sanctioning a municipality to the town and allocating Rs. 2 crores to it as an initial grant. The district Collector, S.S. Rawat, and the Sathyavedu MLA, Narayanaswamy, were among those present.
