BIRTH ANNIVERSARY: The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy (right), and the Pondicherry PCC president, P. Shanmugham pay floral tribute to Rajiv Gandhi on the occasion of his birth anniversary in Pondicherry on Saturday.
PONDICHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy and his Cabinet colleagues, members of Parliament V. Narayanasamy and M. Ramadass, Pondicherry PCC president P. Shanmugham, legislators, freedom fighters, officials and delegates of various wings of the ruling Congress paid floral tributes at the statue of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on the occasion of the leader's birth anniversary on Saturday. Representatives of the Hindu, Muslim and Christian religions read out excerpts from holy books. A group of students from Bharathiar Palakalaikoodam presented hymns highlighting the spirit of patriotism and communal harmony. Mr. Rangasamy read out the Sadhbhavana pledge near the statue of Rajiv Gandhi at the Thattanchavady junction. Earlier, Mr. Shanmugham, along with the Chief Minister, Ministers and MLAs, paid floral tributes at the portrait of Rajiv Gandhi in the party office. Volunteers of the Pondicherry State unit of Youth Congress Committee led by its president K. Pandian held a marathon run from near the Mahatma Gandhi statue on the beach road. The Chief Minister and the PCC leader greeted the participants. Prizes were distributed to the participants at the end of the run.
