Panchayat Raj awards presented

Guntur Zilla Parishad chairman among the recipients



PAT FOR PERFORMERS: Former secretary to Government of India K.S.R. Murthy, presenting the best sarpanch award to Panduranga Rao in Tirupati on Saturday.

TIRUPATI: K.S.R. Murthy, former MP and former secretary to Government of India, has stressed the importance of the Panchayat Raj set-up in reaching the fruits of governance to the rural areas, as envisaged by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Speaking at a function organised by Academy of Grassroots Studies and Research of India (AGRASRI) and the Rajiv Rural Development Foundation here on Saturday to commemorate Rajiv Gandhi's birth anniversary, he said after the enactment of 73rd constitution amendment, the Union Government had allocated Rs. 60,000 crores for various rural development schemes. While only 15 per cent reached the beneficiaries, the rest had to be used to meet administrative expenses.

NRI cell

Mr. Murthy gave away `Rajiv Gandhi Panchayat Raj awards.' Chairperson of Guntur Zilla Parishad P. Nagabhushanam, who opened an NRI cell to mobilise funds for development, president of the Puttaparthi (Anantapur) Mandal Praja Parishad, B. Obul Reddy, a progressive public representative and sarpanch of Allagadapa (Nalgonda dt.), V. Panduranga Rao, who hogged the limelight by seeking a referendum on his two-year rule, were the recipients of the award, which carried a citation and a memento.

Journal released

TUDA Chairman B. Karunakar Reddy released a journal on "Grassroots governance.'' Veteran journalist Turlapati Kutumba Rao, presided over the function. D. Sundar Ram, Director of AGRASRI, welcomed.
