Cops in a tizzy over hoax calls

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The police were sent on a wild goose chase twice over on Saturday after they received a call about a girl being kidnapped and another girl being criminally assaulted in a moving car. Two persons have been detained in connection with the kidnapping call, while in the other case the occupants were released after questioning.

Around 2-45 p.m., the New Delhi police received a call saying that a girl was kidnapped from India Gate. The police swung into action and soon managed to track down the vehicle in which the girl was said to have been kidnapped.

Legal action

Two persons, who had allegedly made the call, were also rounded up. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi), Anita Roy, said the two were being questioned and necessary legal action will be taken against them after ascertaining the circumstances in which they made the call.

In another incident, the West Delhi police received a call around 6 p.m. in which it was said that a man had abducted a woman in a Toyota Qualis at Paschim Vihar and was criminally assaulting her. The police swung into action and managed to track down the vehicle at Wazirpur. The duo were questioned and were let off as the two knew each other.

Police sources said the word about the "abduction" spread when the security guard of a colony in Paschim Vihar noticed the woman leaving the locality in the vehicle along with a man. He felt something amiss about the whole situation and told as much to one of his acquaintances.

That person, in turn, narrated the same to a couple of others. One of them then over-reacted and called up the police. Paschim Vihar police are further looking into the incident.
