PATHANAMTHITTA: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala has demanded a probe into the source of the assets valued at Rs.4,600 crores of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) State unit. Mr. Chennithala was addressing a public reception accorded to the `Chaitanya Yatra' led by him in Ranni town on Saturday afternoon. He said that the CPI(M) which upholds socialist and communist ideologies should clarify the source of the assets amassed by the party State unit over the past decade. Mr. Chennithala alleged that the State unit had become a den of corruption. It has been scuttling the State's development all these years, he added. Mr. Chennithala said that the multi-crore SNC Lavalin deal was the biggest scam, involving politicians, in the country. He alleged that CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan was the main beneficiary of the scam. Mr. Chennithala said that a CBI inquiry should be conducted into the Lavalin deal if the ongoing Vigilance probe was found unsatisfactory. He has urged the Government to bring to light all those who were involved in the Lavalin deal. Mr. Chennithala said that the Oommen Chandy Government was trying to develop the State. So, it is imperative that the party return to power in the next general elections, he added. He said that the CPI(M) was hindering development through agitations and strikes and added that the Congress would meet the challenges posed by the CPI(M). Efforts are on by the UDF Government to create job opportunities in the State. Congress block president T.K. Saju presided over the meeting. Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Adoor Prakash P.J. Kurien, MP, KPCC general secretaries Ajay Tharayil Kodikunnil Suresh and Benny Behenan, State Planning Board member Peelipose Thomas, DCC president K. Sivadasan Nair, secretary Bijily Panavely and district panchayat member Mariamma Cherian spoke on the occasion. The yatra was accorded receptions at Chittar, Kumbazha, Konni and Elamannoor before it culminated at Adoor in the evening. The `Chaitanya yatra' will be given a rousing reception by the party activists at Pandalam, Kozhencherry, Pullad, Mallappally, Thiruvalla and Kadapra on Sunday.
