Weightlifting
NEW DELHI: Indian weightlifters staged their comeback in the international arena with a bang by claiming three silver and six bronze medals on the first two days of the ongoing Asian Junior Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent. The 10-member team, comprising seven girls and three boys, is contesting for the first time in any international event following their one-year suspension, slapped by the International Weightlifting Federation after the Athens doping fiasco last year, ended on August 15. B. Pramila excelled with two silver and one bronze in overall, clean and jerk and snatch respectively, in the 63kg category. Pramila hoisted 111 kg in the clean and jerk and 88 kg in the snatch, which totalled 199 kg for her overall second place finish. The gold went to a Chinese lifter, who successfully lifted 207 kg. Renu Bala won the overall silver by raising 185 kg, including 80 kg in snatch and 105 kg in clean and jerk, in the 58 kg class. The Indian missed the gold by a very narrow margin as her counterpart from Thailand edged past by lifting 192 kg for the gold. K. Kalyani, the younger sister of Sydney bronze medallist Karnam Malleswari, won three bronze medals in 53 kg. Her overall score was 164kg (71 + 93). PTI
