Doctorate conferred on Biocon chief

MANIPAL: The Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) on Saturday conferred a honorary doctorate on the Chairman and Managing Director of Biocon Ltd., Bangalore, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw in recognition of her outstanding achievements in the field of biotechnology and industrial enzymes, at a special convocation, here.

Speaking after receiving the honorary doctorate, Ms. Mazumdar-Shaw said India's skill base has potential that can be harnessed to pursue innovative development.

The National Cancer Institute, the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation have been instrumental in the development of various drugs that are today marketed by big pharma companies. Biotech companies owe their origins to universities and research institutes. Medical centres such as The Mayo Clinic, Sloan Kettering, The Cleveland Clinic, Harvard Medical School and The Karolinska Institute can be credited for this, she said.
