MANIPAL: Chairman and Managing Director of Biocon Ltd. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw on Saturday said India has the opportunity to emerge as a global leader in the field of biotechnology. She was speaking at the CXO conclave on "Aiming for the bigger share of pharmaceutical and biotech market", organised by Manipal AcuNova, here. Ms. Mazumdar-Shaw said India has brilliant minds in the higher education sector. These bright youngsters were looking for avenues and opportunities and it is up to the education sector and the industry to tap the potential of these youngsters, she said. The biggest hindrance is the lack of connectivity among the players to maximise resources, she added. "We have to see how we can make the drug development process affordable, whether it is discovery, development or commercialisation," she said. The country should inculcate research ethos and intellectual property. Without intellectual property, Indian pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors cannot become globally competitive, she said. The Director, NCBS, Bangalore Discovery, Vijay Raghavan, CEO of Manipal Acunova (Clinical Development) D.A. Prasanna, President of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) Ramdas M. Pai and Vice-Chancellor of MAHE H.S. Ballal were present.
