CHENNAI: The Central Crime Branch police arrested a lawyer from Kerala on the charge of converting international phone calls using local numbers. He was arrested from his shop on Triplicane High Road on Tuesday last. The police said they had received a complaint from the Vigilance cell of the Telecommunication Department that a public call office on Triplicane High Road, owned by M. Yusuf Ali, 33, of Veliancheri in Malappuram district, Kerala, was converting international calls into local ones, depriving the department of its due revenue. Following this, a team under T.S. Lakshminathan, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Central Crime Branch, conducted investigations and arrested Yusuf Ali.
They said the department incurred a loss of Rs. 22 lakhs. The arrestedhad been involved in the business for the past two months, police said. Cases under Sections 379 (theft) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code and under the Telegraph Act were filed against him. He had been remanded to judicial custody, the police said.
