MADURAI: The Railway Police have resolved the mystery behind the theft of valuables from reserved compartments in trains with the arrest of G. Kalyanaraman (65) of Keezhakalkandarkottai in Tiruchi, here on Saturday. According to the police, recent enquiries held with train passengers had revealed that whenever a theft was reported in a reserved compartment, a man around 60 years of age was a fellow traveller. Thefts in trains were reported in Madurai, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Tiruchi, Villupuram and Chennai. A special team was formed by the Tiruchi Railway Police to nab the culprit involved in these thefts. On specific information that a suspect had booked a ticket to travel from Chennai to Madurai on Friday, a computer-generated image was got ready by the police here. When the train reached Madurai, a passenger, Rajendran, complained that he had lost valuables worth Rs.50,000, along with Rs.15, 000 in cash. Kalyanaraman, whose appearance matched with that of the computer-generated image, was arrested here while leaving the station with the suitcase of the complainant. Following interrogation, the police also recovered gold jewels, cellular phones, digital cameras and other valuables from his residence in Tiruchi. Further investigation is on.
