MADURAI: Collector D. Raajendiran deplored overexploitation of natural resources and called upon the public to plan an eco-friendly life, sustainable on judicious use of resources and imbibe the intense application of renewable energy in everyday life. He was speaking at the inaugural of the Rajiv Gandhi Renewable Energy Day celebration held jointly by the district administration, the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) and the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) here on Saturday. Though one could not imagine a life without use of natural resources, one should orient development towards use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind energy in meeting basic requirements of domestic life and industrial activities. The public should patronise solar energy in a big way as it could not only cut down cost but also provide an alternative source of energy. He said students could play an active role in disseminating information on use of renewable sources of energy among the public. As future pillars of the society, they should involve more in propagating use of renewable energy even in their families. On its part, the administration had embarked on the process of popularising alternative sources of energy among the people by highlighting the Central and State Government schemes such as use of solar water heating systems, installation of solar photovoltaic panels to generate solar energy for home needs, solar lanterns, solar cool caps, etc. The Project Officer of DRDA, Abdul Razziq, Assistant Project Officer, A. Meiyyar, the MLAs, N. Nanmaran and L. Santhanam, the Deputy General Manger of TEDA, S. M. Vijayakumar, and the Block Development Officer, R. Dhanushkodi, spoke. Later, the Collector distributed certificates to school and college students who distinguished themselves in oratorical, essay and painting competitions, held on the occasion. Earlier, students from various schools took out a rally in connection with the celebration from the Collectorate to Dr. Ambedkar Road.
