Four-member gang arrested

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The police have arrested a four-member gang wanted in several criminal cases, pick-pocketing and burglaries in the city and suburbs. The arrested were Suni alias `Chani' Suni, 30, of Vazhiyla, Vattiyoorkavu, Safir, 18 of Azhikode, Sattar, 20, of Kattakada and Govindan, 50, of Chittatinkara. According to the police, Suni was the leader of the gang and several warrants are pending against him.

The four were arrested by a team led by Circle Inspector (Peroorkada) V. Suresh Kumar. They were produced in the court and remanded to 14 days in judicial custody.

Highway patrol

The officials of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) carried out a surprise check in a Highway Patrol stationed near Sreekariyam on Saturday morning and recovered unaccounted money totalling Rs.1,750 from the patrol party. The surprise check was carried out at 7 a.m. by a team led by Dy.SP Sreekumaran Nair following complaints received by the VACB Director against the Highway Patrol.

The team also found that the patrol party led by Sub-Inspector N. Mohan had collected Rs.1,100 as penalty from motorists after issuing receipts.

Youth held

The rural police have arrested a 24-year-old youth wanted in connection with several cases of assault and burglaries registered in the district.

The accused was identified as Ajayan alias `Pangya' Ajayan of Kattachakonam, Uloor. According to the police, he is the first accused in the murder that took place at Nalanchira in 2000. `Pottan' Rajesh, `Pallan Sajeev,' Jolly and `Tarzan' Rajesh, other members of the gang led by Ajayan, have already been arrested and are in the jail.
