VIJAYAWADA: Demanding rectification of irregularities and issuance of ration cards to all the eligible, activists of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxists) (CPI-M) staged a dharna in front of the office of the Sub-Collector here on Saturday. They raised slogans demanding issuance of white ration cards instead of pink ones to the eligible poor, enrolment of all members of every family in their respective cards, elimination of delay in the issuance and distribution of cards under `anthyodaya annyojana' scheme. Addressing the gathering, CPI(M) city secretary Ch. Baburao alleged several irregularities in the issuance of cards in the city. He demanded that married persons in a family be identified as a different unit and separate cards be issued. Vijayawada West MLA Sheik Nazarvali said people could not be made to go round the DPL centres for days together. He also wanted the State to enhance the income limit from Rs. 24,000 to Rs. 36,000 a year for the eligibility criterion for a family to be enumerated as the one below poverty line. CPI(M) leader Donepudi Kasinath said though the announcement by officials that 1.85 lakh white ration cards would be given in the city and three lakhs in the district was laudable, over 4,000 eligible poor families were given pink cards, instead of white cards. He wanted officials to take immediate steps to replace the pink ones with white cards.
