High Court summons high officials in private school fee issue

The High Court has also sought the number of poor students admitted in about 500 unaided private schools under the `free quota' scheme

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has taken strong exception to the fact that many private schools in the Capital, who have been allotted land at a concessional rate, did not adhere to the norms of providing free education to the poor students.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice B A Khan and Justice M B Lokur summoned DDA Vice-Chairman, Director Education of Delhi Government and Land and Development Officer to be present in the court on August 25 to reply to the queries in connection with the issue.

Voluntary agency

On the petition of Counsel Ashok Agrawal appearing for Social Jurist, a voluntary agency, the Court wanted to know the number of public schools which had been allotted land in the Capital by the DDA at a concessional rate.

In an order in January 2004, the High Court had directed the Delhi Government to strictly implement the rule in private schools which states that at least 25 percent of the total strength of the school should be kept aside for the poor students and they should be provided free education.

Specific direction

The High Court has also sought the number of poor students admitted in about 500 unaided private schools under the `free quota' scheme.

Mr Agrawal told the court that despite its specific direction in the January 20 judgement on its public interest litigation (PIL) on the issue, many private schools had been turning away the poor students. - UNI
