BOWLED OVER: The list with the names of `cricketers'.
COIMBATORE: Residents of Bharathi Nagar under Pannimadai Panchayat here may have felt as though they had been hit by a bouncer from a tearaway pace bowler. They could not believe that the draft electoral rolls suggested four legendary figures of world cricket - Alvin Kalicharan, Vivian Richards (former West Indian cricketers), Sunil Gavaskar and Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi - lived in the same area. When the voters checked for their names in the list they also found the surnames of the former cricketers. Surely, these icons of world cricket did not live in panchayat located near suburban Thudialur, eight km north of the city. Surprise gave way to suspicion of foul play or error. People complained to officials and an inquiry was conducted. It was revealed that Raju, an ex-serviceman and a die-hard cricket fan had named his four sons `Kalicharan', `Richard', `Gavaskar' and `Pataudi'. But the presence of mere surnames in the list was enough to cause a flutter among cricket crazy voters despite the fact that the name `Raju' was against all the four names in column for father's/husband's name.
