Mini `Parliament' in West Godavari district

Staff Reporter

It's a 36-year-old dream come true for 86-year-old Gandhian

Ch.V.P. Murthy Raju

HYDERABAD: A Sarvodaya leader, Gandhian and six-time MLA, the 86-year-old Ch. V. P. Murthy Raju, announced that his 36 year-old dream — a building resembling the Parliament in his native village, Penindra Kolanu — had turned into reality.

At a press conference here on Sunday, he said the late Morarji Desai, the then Deputy Prime Minister, had laid the foundation for the building in 1969. Costing over Rs. 1crore, it had taken him 36 years to complete the building, 100 feet in diameter, a suspended roof, 17 rooms and two conference halls.

Research centre

Mr. Raju's wish is to have the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, or the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, inaugurate the complex, which he termed his labour of love for Gandhian principles. He said the building was located in Nidamarru Mandal, West Godavari district, close to Kolleru lake.

He planned to have a centre for research in Gandhian philosophy and a Khadi and Village Industries Board's handicrafts outlet. Researchers coming to work on Gandhian thought would promote tourism in the region, he said.

Function at Red Fort

Mr. Raju, who is a member of the National Committee for the Centenary Celebrations of Vande Mataram, said, the State-level centenary apart, the main function would be held at the Red Fort on September 7.
