TIRUCHI: Work on establishing a new market complex at Sengulam Colony here is expected to be completed in a month. The market at Subramaniapuram will be shifted to the new premises after the work is finished. The market complex is being established at the massive site, which had long been encroached. The district revenue authorities cleared the encroachments a few months ago. The site was originally purchased some decades ago by the then Golden Rock Municipality to set up a market. The corporation has now taken up construction of the market complex at a cost of Rs.14.2 lakhs. Besides, the area would be provided with a compound wall and public conveniences at a cost of Rs.6.9 lakhs. About 110 shops are being established at the market. The existing market at Subramaniapuram is functioning on a public thoroughfare. All shops in the market, including shops that sell meat, would be shifted to the new site, corporation officials said. The Corporation Commissioner, Harmander Singh, who inspected the progress of the work on Friday, directed officials to expedite the work. He inspected the construction of a culvert near E.R. Higher Secondary School, sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs.17 lakhs, and a bridge across the Malattar near the Kondayampettai-Kumbakonam Salai Junction, sanctioned at a cost of Rs.24 lakhs.
